- Q-1: Is current RS-1600 upgradable to use dual power supply ?
-
- A-1:
-
- No, the dual-power rack chasis has two slots for power supply unit. The chasis
- and backplane are both different. The RP-2000 dual power supply unit is also
- different from previous single power supply unit.
-
- Q-2: Does ZyXEL have another version of firmware special for U-1496P ?
- Is U-1496P using 1M EPROM?
-
- A-2:
-
- ZyXEL develops one unique version of firmware for U-1496P model. The firmware
- code has a C suffix, such as RM620C.U12, and RM620C.U13.
-
- The U-1496P is equipped with 1M bit 29F series 5V only Flash EPROM chips.
-
- Q-3: How to modify U-1496 modem to accomodate 2M bit EPROM's ?
-
- A-3:
-
- . The 2M bit EPROM has 32 pins the same as the 1M bit EPROM does. In order
- for the existing of U24 and U25 need to be modified as follows :
-
- . Pin 30 of the orginal socket accomodating 1M bit EPROM needs to be removed.
-
- . Install a 32 pin socket onto the top of the original socket.
-
- . Solder a wire to connect pin 30 of the new socket to pin 46 of U26 (MC68000).
-
- . Solder a jumper-wire to short pin 31 and pin 16 of the socket.
-
- . Put the new firmware on the add-on socket and do a power-on test.
-
- Q-4: How is the U-1496P powered ? Battery ? NiCd cell ?
-
- A-4:
-
- The U-1496P can be powered by an AC power adaptor, +12V battery, or by common
- car cigarette lighter adaptor.
-
- Q-5: What is the EPROM speed required on the plus models and regular models?
-
- A-5:
-
- A) 150ns or faster EPROMs are recommended for non-plus model modems.
- B) 100ns EPROMs are recommend for the plus model modems.
-
- Q-6: What is the data pump ZyXEL is using?
-
- A-6:
-
- The ZyXEL modems use self-developed ZyXEL data pumps with two TI's Digital
- Signal Processor chips.
-
- Q-7: What settings are required to obtain the fastest data connection.
-
- A-7:
-
- 1. Lock the serial port speed to the fastest/highest speed supported by the
- host computer.
- 2. Turn on hardware flow control by enabling RTS/CTS flow control in the
- communication program.
- 3. External modem owners must use a modem cable(RS-232) that provides
- hardware flow control signal wires.
- 4. Recommmended that the computer's serial port uses 16550 UART chips.
-
- Q-8: How to do a hardware reset?
-
- A-8:
-
- 1) U-1496
-
- Holding the " ENTER " key down for a few seconds while powering up will reset
- the modem. The LCD display will show " Loading default ".
-
- 2) U-1496E & E+
-
- Holding the " VOICE/DATA " key down for a few seconds while powering up the
- modem will reset the modem. The modem will also run continuous analog loopback
- self-test. Printable characters will be shown on the terminal connected to the
- modem's RS232 port. The HS,CD,DSR,CTS,RXD,EC,SQ and TST LEDs should be ON.
-
- 3) U-1496B & B+
-
- Short the TS2 jumper with a plug then power up the computer. The modem will
- be reset and will continuously run self-test. Printable characters will be
- shown on the computer screen. The TS1 LED should be continuously ON.
-
- Q-9: In U-1496E and U-1496R how to auto dial a number when data/voice switch
- is pushed?
-
- A-9:
-
- Set the S35.4=1 will make the modem dial the default number when the
- Data/Voice switch is pushed. It is necessary to save the number in the
- default phone directory first.
